|CRIMSON TAZVINZWA, AIWA! NO!|Donald Trump has attacked “hostility and constant negative comments” in the media as he called for harmony after suspected bombs targeted CNN and prominent Democrats.

On Wednesday glass-filled pipe bombs were sent to former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, former president Barack Obama and the news channel. The packages for Mrs Clinton and Mr Obama were intercepted by the US Security Service but the one for CNN led to the evacuation of the New York office. None of the bombs detonated as officials removed them for examination and disposal.

Political climate While the motive behind the action is not clear, it has sparked a debate over the dangerous political climate – the result of cross-party tension and the increasingly personal rhetoric – is to blame. The US President, who has repeatedly attacked his political opponents as criminals, struck a more conciliatory tone at a campaign rally in Wisconsin ahead of the midterm elections as he addressed the bombs. “We want all sides to come together in peace and harmony. Any acts or threats of political violence are an attack on our democracy itself.

Neither of the packages reached the pair.

‘Do you see how nice I’m behaving?’ “By the way, do you see how nice I’m behaving tonight?” he added. “Have you ever seen this?” Mr Trump also took aim at those “engaged in the political arena,” saying they must “stop treating political opponents as being morally defective. He referenced high-profile incidents in which conservatives had been accosted in restaurants and public spaces by critics.

“The media also has a responsibly to set a civil tone and to stop the endless hostility and constant negative and oftentimes false attacks and stories.” The President is well-known for lambasting media stories as “fake news” and for targeting specific media organisations and reporters. The first crude bomb to be discovered had been delivered on Monday to the New York compound of George Soros, a liberal billionaire and major contributor to Democratic causes. The FBI said an additional package was intended for former Attorney General Eric Holder, but that one ended up at a Florida office of Democratic Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, whose return address was on it.

Later on Wednesday, the FBI said two additional packages addressed for Democrat Representative Maxine Waters had been intercepted that were similar in appearance to five others. Republicans condemned the bombs but Democrats said their words rang “hollow” when coming from Mr Trump. All the packages were similar: manila envelopes with bubble-wrap interior bearing six stamps and the return address of Florida Representative Schultz.

She is the former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee who was accused by Clinton rivals of secretly helping the party’s eventual presidential nominee. The pipe bombs were packed with powder and shards of glass. The devices, each with a small battery, were made from PVC pipe about six inches long and covered with black tape, said a law enforcement official who viewed X-ray images. Additional reporting by PA
