Two of Theresa May’s trusted 10 Downing Street team have reportedly begun secretly preparing for a second referendum on the final Brexit deal, against the Prime Minister’s wishes.

Cabinet minister David Lidington has even met with Labour MPs to discuss what question will be on the ballot paper and how the legislation can be passed through Parliament, according to the Sunday Times. An unnamed Labour MP said: ‘The meeting went beyond sounding us out about a referendum to appearing to advocate one.’

A source told the Times: ‘The prime minister could tell voters she tried to honour the referendum result, but Parliament has spoken.’ May met with former PM David Cameron and discussed the various Brexit options, he told friends she opposed a second referendum but ‘as a servant of the Commons’ she would back it if MPs voted for one.

Theresa May launches furious attack on Tony Blair for ‘undermining’ her on Brexit The Prime Minister again outlined her opposition to a second referendum last night branding supporters for a ‘people’s vote’ of subverting the political process. She attacked former PM Tony Blair for supporting a People’s Vote and said: ‘I have never lost sight of my duty and that is to deliver on the referendum result and to do so in a way which protects British jobs, keeps us safe and protects our precious union.

‘For Tony Blair to go to Brussels and seek to undermine our negotiations by advocating for a second referendum is an insult to the office he once held and the people he once served.’
