The Queen’s home, East Front of Buckingham Palace and the Victoria Memorial highlight a seasonal event and an historic one – the birth of the Queen Mother, and the beginning of the summer tourism season at Windsor this weekend.
This weekend, Buckingham Palace began its official summer tourist season, offering visitors a chance to tour the magnificent state rooms used for official and ceremonial events in this working royal residence.
2019 UK 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Queen Victoria CERTIFIED BU £5. To celebrate the 200thAnniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria, The Royal Mint has issued a brand new £5 coin. Queen Victoria was born in 1819 and became Queen when she was just 18 years old.
This year, to mark the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth, visitors can also see artefacts from her reign and artwork depicting her life at Buckingham Palace in a special collection called Queen Victoria’s Palace.
Queen Victoria and Buckingham Palace are closely associated.
In 1837, the recently crowned Queen became the first monarch to live here and, as her family and empire grew, she renovated, redesigned and extended it, turning it into one of the most-recognised palaces in the world.
The East Front and the famous balcony, where the Royal Family make appearances on major occasions, were added by Victoria.
The Victoria Memorial, which includes a statue of an enthroned Queen Victoria, a gilded Winged Victory and other symbols of Victoria, didn’t exist during her reign – planning for it began less than a month after her death in 1901.
Cara Charles Banks, the head of the hospital which treated victims of the Salisbury nerve agent attacks joins nurses, psychiatrists, cancer specialists and family doctors and is among more than 30 local and national NHS workers recognised in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
