By CRIMSON TAZVINZWA//At least 46 migrants trying to cross from Somalia to Yemen have drowned when their boat capsized, UN officials say.

Another 16 people are missing after the vessel overturned in rough seas off Yemen’s coast, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) says.

Survivors say the smuggler’s boat was carrying at least 100 people who had left the port of Bosaso to find work in Yemen and other Gulf countries.

Yemeni security officials say a boat carrying at least 150 African migrants has capsized off a southern province, killing at least 30 people including five women and children.

About 50 migrants drowned near the coast of Yemen - UN
The smuggler, who carried more than 120 Somali and Ethiopian migrants, forced people to sail to the coast of the Yemeni province in the Arabian Sea, but about 50 migrants drowned. This was reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM – FNI).

The narrow waters between the Horn of Africa and Yemen have been a popular migration route despite Yemen’s ongoing conflict. Migrants try to make their way to oil-rich Gulf countries.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.
